Surviving an economic crisis
![]() |
We have spent years helping a family in South America consolidate their citrus fruit production business. But at one point, bank deposits were confiscated and credit disappeared due to the region's unstable economic situation.
The family were in the process of building a new plant, with the help of HSBC Private Bank. We had to decide whether to wait for better market conditions or abandon the project altogether.
Having worked closely with the family for many years, we were certain that the business had solid foundations. We also recognised that the food demand in Europe and Asia was likely to help the company recover.
So we continued our support. The market recovered, the business grew and our relationship with the family is now stronger than ever.
We like to think that our clients can depend on us, even in turbulent times. We have a long-standing presence in emerging markets. So as well as unlocking the right doors, we know how to keep them open.
