Making connections with emerging markets

The opportunity: A client in Europe had just won a contract with a major mobile phone business in Latin America, giving exclusive rights for buying, storing, packing and distributing around 50 million mobile phones a year to all points of sale in the region. To deliver on this contract, the client needed significant financing.

Our solution: With our infrastructure and resources in Latin America we were able to support a deal of this scale. We used our long-standing connections in this emerging market, working with our Madrid-based HSBC Commercial Banking team, who have strong links with the telecommunications industry.

Outcomes: We were able to secure the necessary financing for the client, with a potential extended scope of more than USD400 million, part of which involved a loan facility syndicated across 12 other major banks. We also gave the client access to account opening, cash management, foreign exchange and a range of other local banking services, with the support of a trilingual Geneva-based team.
