December 2004: Global Forum
The US economic outlook
The economic outlook for the US in 2005 and beyond was top of the agenda at the HSBC Global Forum in December, sponsored by HSBC Private Bank.
Leading the discussion was Ian Morris, Chief US Economist for HSBC Securities (USA) Inc. His presentation covered the key challenges facing the US, including the monetary policy, the impact of current oil prices, the housing bubble and financing the trade and fiscal deficits. Mr. Morris analyzed the effect of the jobless recovery, GDP growth rates, low inflation and an increase in long-term interest rates on the US monetary policy. According to Morris, “The US is experiencing cyclical strength. But there are many structural weaknesses in the US economy that may lead to a period of sluggish growth in 2005".
HSBC's Global Forums are designed to provide clients of the Private Bank – Americas with the opportunity to participate in discussions on current economic and financial trends with our leading experts.
